Cagliostro Castle is the first feature film written and directed by Princess mononoke creator Hayao Miyazaki, is one of the few “Walt Disney of Japan” films based on the work of another creator. The characters come straight from the popular Lupine III manga and anime series designed by pseudonymous artist Monkey Punch. By the time Miyazaki was given a chance in the franchise, super-thief Lupine, his laconic partner Jigen, their competitor / collaborator Fujiko, and their obsessive pursuer, Detective Zenigata, were already icons in Japan, with a series of popular comics, two television series. series, and two cinema films, one of which is live, already in release. Miyazaki, who had written and directed a few TV episodes, stuck with Lupin’s story and frantic modus operandi, but made him a young romantic who doesn’t hesitate to drop everything to help a pretty girl in difficulty. The girl in question is Clarisse, princess of the tiny Duchy of Cagliostro, the smallest member state of the UN. Count Cagliostro, an intriguing distant relative acting on an old prophecy about “uniting darkness and light”, has imprisoned her and plans to marry her in an attempt to find a secret treasure. Zenigata, The Earl, and Lupine face off in a series of high-energy comedic chases and showdowns that showcase Miyazaki’s incredibly detailed and gloriously colorful animation style. This caper flick possesses Miyazaki’s usual benevolent charm, but it injects an energetic manic humor that her quieter kids’ movies never quite reach. [Tasha Robinson]
