The Academy will announce the full roster of this year’s nominees on March 15.

The 93rd annual Oscars is due to be delayed this year from its original ceremony date. The 2021 Oscars will take place on April 25, postponed for two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year’s Oscars saw a record 32 films that were submitted to the committee for the nomination for Best Animated Feature. Among the 32, there were Studio 4 ° C Children of the sea, Kitaro Kousaka, DLE, the madhouse Okko’s Inn, Hiroyuki Imaishi and Trigger’s Promare, and the film by Makoto Shinkai and CoMix Wave Alter with you. Unfortunately, none of the films listed received a nomination.

In 2019, the Academy relaxed its rules regarding the subject of eligibility for the Animated Feature Film category. Prior to this year, the requirement was that eight eligible animated feature films had to be theatrically released in a single calendar year for the category to even be featured at the awards ceremony. Fortunately, now this rule has been lifted, which gives the possibility of presenting more great animation works. In addition, voting for the shortlist of nominations is now automatically open to members of the Short Films and Animated Feature Films Directorate, while other members must choose to participate in the voting for nominations.

While last year’s animated films may not have made the shortlist, anime as a growing animation genre in the West is certainly showing its growing influence. Notably, the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Animated Feature category was also the first and only anime to win the award. This movie was from 2002 Abducted as if by magic. Other animated films that have been nominated include Howl’s Moving Castle, The wind picks up, The tale of Princess Kaguya, When Marnie was there, and The red turtle. No animated films have been screened for the shortlist since 2016.
