Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Animated Series Has An Extremely Sleek Intro

I like anime, but maybe I like anime introductions even more. At their best, they’re a rush of style and energy, they often feature better animation than the show that follows, and they’re regularly marked by top-notch Japanese jazz, rock, or blues tunes.

Netflix just released the intro to the next Cyberpunk anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and there’s a Franz Ferdinand track on top – but hey, it’s still pretty good.

Edgerunners is a ten-part anime series set in Night City and written and produced in partnership with CD Projekt Red, but with a different cast of characters from Cyberpunk 2077. It is animated by Studio Trigger, the Japanese anime studio responsible for Kill La Kill, SSSS.Gridman and the Little Witch Academia movie. These aren’t projects I like, but I’m pretty confident at least that the intro won’t be the flashiest animation in the series. A trailer released last month points to decent production values.

Who knows how good the series will be, but I appreciate the intro. The Franz Ferdinand track doesn’t have the horn section I crave the most, but it’s still good. If Speed Grapher can use Duran Duran, then Cyberpunk can use a Franz Ferdinand song from 2004. Plus all the other elements I want from an intro are there: bright colors, big fonts, visual metaphors pushed to the limit extremely ridiculous…

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is slated for September. In the meantime, go ahead and tell me your favorite anime intro. I can’t choose mine – but only because it’s Cowboy Bebop and it seems too obvious to write.
