All the Best Upcoming Anime Shows of 2020

We’re halfway through 2020, and so far it’s been a fantastic year for anime. (It must be a fantastic year for Something, right?) Take, for example, the last seasons of Haikyu!! and food wars– our favorite shows really didn’t disappoint.

Unfortunately, thanks to the global pandemic that has devastated all sectors of society, anime – and the entertainment industry as a whole – has taken a hit. Even massively popular, well-funded shows like my hero academia had to be suspended mid-season last spring. Several release dates are now on hold for the same reason, but we’ve tracked down all the anime shows that are still slated to release new episodes this year. Hopefully no other releases get pushed back.

Here are the best upcoming anime shows to look forward to in 2020.

fire force premiered last summer to great acclaim, receiving endless praise for its wild action scenes and beautiful animation. From now on, the studio David Production (Cells in action!, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) is releasing Season 2, which will focus on amateur pyrokenetic Shinra Kusakabe, who can throw fire from her feet.

2) The attack of the Titans

  • Season: 4
  • Release date: Fall 2020 (exact date to be determined)
  • Stream it on: Hulu

The attack of the Titans, arguably the biggest and most impactful anime of the last decade, is a dark fantasy show about humans living in hiding from gigantic human-eating titans. The show follows Eren Yeager, a young hero determined to save the world from the titans and seek revenge.

Seasons one through three were bitingly intense, truly living up to the expectations set by the high fantasy genre. While the series has definitely come under scrutiny for subtext and fascist themes, dozens of fans are looking forward to this fourth and final season.

4) Aggretsuko

  • Season: 3
  • Release date: To be determined (by the end of 2020)
  • Stream it on: netflix

If you’ve never watched an animated musical about an anthropomorphized red panda accountant who sings death metal in a karaoke bar, you’re seriously missing something.

While most anime tends to be aimed at younger audiences, Aggretsuko will resonate with any jaded 9-5 worker in their 20s or older. Wrestling with real-world issues like sexism in the workplace (the main character’s boss is literally a pig) and all the complexities of adult relationships, this show perfectly balances humor and heart – and season 3 will only be certainly no different.
